Simple Ways to Improve Fuel Efficiency

Simple Ways to Improve Fuel EfficiencyWho doesn't want to maximize the distance they get out of their fuel tank, especially with gas prices climbing to record numbers? While there is no magical spell that will cause your vehicle's MPGs to increase exponentially there are a few things you can do to restore or enhance your fuel efficiency quite significantly. Try out these tips and then you'll be ready to hit the road, not the gas station.

Driving Habits

Good driving habits promote maximum fuel efficiency. Here's a few tips to help boost your MPGs.

  • Reduce ride weight - If you unnecessarily carry around excess weight, like golf clubs, tools or otherwise, be sure to remove them from the car. Extra weight means more work for the motor.
  • Slow acceleration - If it absolutely necessary to get from zero to 35 mph as quickly as possible? No. Going easy on the accelerator will save you gas.
  • Proper fuel grade - If your car doesn't explicitly say it needs high octane fuel, don't buy it. The spendier fuel won't save you gas.
  • No idling - Modern vehicles require very little fuel to start, so the longer you idle the more gas you're wasting.

Maintenance Needs

Of course there are plenty of maintenance tasks that can help increase your fuel efficiency as well. Here's a look at just a few.

  • Air pressure in tires - Underinflated tires make the engine work harder, which can reduce your fuel efficiency by 25 percent or more. Make sure your tires always have the proper amount of air in them.
  • Fuel filter - A dirty fuel filter will cause contamination in combustion chamber, which will reduce the performance of your car.
  • Air filter - A blocked air filter will prevent needed oxygen from getting into the motor, which will then substitute the missing air with extra gas.
  • Scheduled services - Keeping up with factory maintenance, including new spark plugs and ignition coils, will ensure your car continues to run smooth and get maximum MPGs.
