Top Auto Electric Troubles

Top Auto Electric TroublesWhile it is gas that you put in the tank of your car, electricity is still a necessity for proper vehicle operation, and we aren't talking about hybrids. Electricity is necessary to ensure correct engine function, run accessories such as the radio and power seats, and get your vehicle started. Electrical problems can be a pain when it comes to car trouble, but depending on what occurs, the fault is generally one of the following common auto electric issues.

Battery Problems

The battery stores electricity that is created by the alternator to help get the car started. It also power electrical components when the engine is not running. If the battery were to die it would result in a vehicle that could not start. While batteries do die over time and need to be replaced, generally every, two to five years depending on the type, they most often die because the lights are left on or a door is ajar. In these situations the battery can be jump started and the alternator will re-charge it.

Blown Fuse

Fuses are used in electrical circuits to prevent excessive electricity from damaging the circuit or the mechanisms that are powered in the circuit. If an excess amount of electricity flows through the circuit the fuse will break the circuit, which is called a blown fuse. Fuses are quite simply to replace on most vehicles and are inexpensive. You can often assume a fuse has blown if a full system has stopped working, such as the headlights, the power windows or other items.

Stuck Relay

Relays within electrical systems act as on/off switches. If an item in your vehicle seems to stay on or won't turn off, it is possible the relay has become stuck. This can be damaging to the part, as well as the car battery. For example, if the fuel pump relay is stuck on the on position the pump could continue running after you turn the vehicle off because it will draw power from the battery. This results in damage to the fuel pump and kills your battery.

Failed Alternator

The alternator is what produces electricity to power electrical components of your vehicle and keep the engine running right. If the alternator begins to fail you could encounter numerous electrical troubles ranging from difficulties with the radio to problems actually starting the car.
